Oil and gas fuels the world. At Plethora, we understand that this is a complex industry with unique demands. Every step of the supply chain presents challenges, from the high pressures and temperatures in wells to the corrosive chemicals handled in the refining process.

Machine shops providing custom fabrication for the oil and gas industry must meet these demands. Our expertise at Plethora guarantees that your industry’s custom parts will stand up to the challenges of any designated application.

Special Requirements for Oil and Gas Equipment

Extreme Environments

Oil and gas equipment often need to operate in harsh environmental conditions, including:

  • High pressures and temperatures: Downhole equipment can see pressures in the tens of thousands of PSI and temperatures of several hundred degrees.
  • Corrosive chemicals: Oil and gas processing often involves harsh substances like hydrogen sulfide that corrode many materials.
  • Abrasive media: Fluid media can contain sand, grit, or other particulates that quickly wear out components.

These conditions mean oil and gas components have little margin for error. Plethora offers various stainless steel, aluminum, and plastic materials that can withstand extreme operating environments and extend equipment life without sacrificing performance.

Oil and gas companies can’t afford downtime. As a result, equipment must continuously produce or risk disrupting the entire supply chain. When a part failure can cost millions of dollars in lost production, the quality of custom components has to be beyond doubt.

Likewise, even planned maintenance can interrupt production. Oil and gas equipment must operate reliably with minimal need for maintenance or replacements. This dependability is especially true of drilling equipment, which may contain difficult-to-access components. These components risk companies unexpected delays and costs if they don’t function dependably through the life of the equipment.

Workers in the oil and gas industry face many risks due to hazardous conditions. Poorly fabricated components can lead to leaks or line bursts, rotating wellhead errors, and exposure to uncontrolled electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, or other hazardous energy sources. The best way to ensure custom parts function safely and reliably is to use high-quality parts from a trustworthy machine shop.

Custom Fabrication for the Oil and Gas Industry: Meeting the Challenge

Plethora can provide materials that will ensure parts meet almost any challenge, whether an application calls for resistance to high pressures or temperatures, corrosive chemicals, or abrasive media. In addition, if an application requires materials beyond our standard stocks, we can quickly make special orders.

Plethora’s machine shop fabricates custom parts to tight tolerances and specifications. Our machining capabilities include 3-axis and 5-axis CNC milling:

  • Tighter tolerances to ± 0.001″ [± 0.03mm] available, depending on part geometry
  • Holes with diameters as small as 0.020″ [0.51mm]
  • Features with radii as small as 0.032″ [0.81mm]

CNC turning with live tooling:

  • Tighter tolerances to ± 0.0005″ [± 0.01mm] available, depending on part geometry.
  • Holes with diameters as small as 0.020” [0.51mm]
  • We support OD and ID grooves and threading.
  • Most coarse and fine metric, inch, and some NPT thread sizes are supported. In addition, we will add thread relief grooves as required for manufacturing, for example, when threading to a shoulder.

And a range of finishing and secondary operations:

  • Powder coating
  • Plating
  • Anodizing
  • Alodine coating
  • Zinc plating
  • Tin plating
  • Copper plating
  • Passivation
  • Electro polish
  • Chem film
  • Blasting
  • Clean room packaging
  • ...and more!

Plethora is committed to providing our customers the highest level of quality. Our quality control team works alongside machinists on each shift in addition to regular inspections.
